Creating new Perspectives in Medicine

Two medical students looking at a three dimensional anatomy model of the heart

We are convinced that Augmented Reality (AR) must create new perspectives in medicine. That is why Augmentomy (Augmented Anatomy) is challenging the State-of-the-Art in medical data visualization. We strive for a world without preventable treatment errors, by giving every physician all the information they need to make correct decisions.

Current Situation in Medicine

3D Models on 2D Screens

Currently three-dimensional information is presented or learned on two-dimensional screens or in textbooks. This theoretical 2D representation is not suitable for practical use on human bodies. Students struggle with the perception of anatomical proportions.

Outdated State-Of-The-Art

To learn anatomy, a lot of students have to use technologies that are out of date. One common practice is to draw the schematics of the different structures of the human body. Though such drawings can be useful, they sometimes lead to misconceptions.

Human Treatment Errors

According to Johns Hopkins, more than a quarter of surgical incidents are the result of human error. A lot of the time, mental overload plays a key role in the cause of human errors. Studies show that when a nurse or doctor is distracted, the likelihood of an error increases.

Our Solution: AugMedEd

We are developing AugMedEd, an Augmented Reality (AR) platform for collaborative 3D interaction with complex medical data. With AugMedEd, we create an intuitive learning method, that will set a new standard of anatomy teaching. It enables and facilitates the lasting memorization of various muscle groups, bones or nerve tracts more quickly. AR offers an interactive and contemporary format for imparting knowledge. By addressing the verbal and non-verbal perceptual systems, absorbed knowledge is better retained and can be recalled more easily later. It is this basic anatomical knowledge that leads to better trained physicians in the long term.

Collaboration with Peers

Through the use of AugMedEd, students will be able to collaborate with their peers,  to interact with and study 3D anatomical structures in a multi user setting.

Sharing of Educational Materials

Using AugMedEd, instructors and teachers will also be able to share educational materials with their classes.

Automatic Creation of 3D Models

The AugMedEd model generation pipeline will make it simple for educators to transform DICOM images into 3D models.

Medicine is one of the most important areas for human well-being.  That‘s why it‘s hard to imagine how many important technological developments get stuck in the process phase or as a university project. During our studies, we have seen many great projects that could have a huge impact on the medical field. At Augmentomy, we believe it is our duty to take advantage of these opportunities to offer new perspectives to all people and to protect health as the ultimate good. This drives us and gives us the strength to do our part against avoidable human suffering. So at the end of the day we can be sure that we have given our best to create new perspectives in hopeless situations.

Mutual Esteem Always Comes First

Appreciation is the cornerstone of a functioning society. That is why it is also important for every healthy company. At Augmentomy, however, it must always be in 1st place, because that is what makes up our culture.

Technology Does Not Replace Humans

Even though our entire company is built on technology, we still believe that it cannot replace humans. We believe in a union of people and technology.

Courage to Fail

For us, failure is part of the game. That‘s why we live a culture of failure, in which we are convinced that something valuable can be learned from every mistake. It‘s important to accept the situation and stay focused.

Challenge the State of the Art

As in any other field, it is important in medicine to keep up with the times. However, this does not apply to us - we want to challenge the state of the art, so that we can actively shape the future and not just accept it.

Encourage Personal Fulfillment

Personal development is part of life and accepting that is fundamental for all of us. But we want to go beyond that and consciously challenge it to get the best out of each of us.

We Take our Business Seriously Not Ourselves

Fun and quality are equally important to us. We guarantee both, by taking our work seriously, but never forget, that we are human beings. And as we all know, celebrating and having fun is part of being human.

With a Powerful Vision: AR for Clinical Use Cases

The enormous potential of AugMedEd has been recognized not only in the educational sector (theoretical knowledge transfer), but also in the medical sector (support in the practical activities of physicians): plans for a new medical product are already underway. This includes preliminary activities related to the implementation of a QMS (ISO 13485), as well as the development of a product development plan in accordance with the MDR and a concept for the execution of a clinical study.
